There are 6 common ways that are used widely for Whatsapp hacking as given below:

1. Spyware
2. OTP Phishing
3. QR-Code Hijacking
4. Call Forwarding
5. Men In The Middle Attack
6. Email Spoofing

Spyware

Spywares are the RAT (Remote Access Trojan) software that is manually installed in the target device and then the attacker or hacker can make complete access to the target device and monitor all activities or even change the lock of the victim device. We posted a brief post on this topic you can check it out here.

OTP Phishing

It is the widely used hacking technique so 90% of you are already familiar with it. In OTP Phishing the attacker hacks the target account in real time. The attacker sends a malicious link to a victim that opens a fake webpage with a phone number parameter in it.

Once the victim enters their phone number then it will be sent to the attacker and the attacker use it for the Whatsapp application, and an OTP will be generated and sent to that number, meanwhile victim redirect to the next page that asks for OTP and once victim enters OTP, the attacker retrieves it and able to access victims Whatsapp account.

QR-Code Hijacking

This is basically a phishing attack in which the victim is redirected to a webpage and makes the victim scans their Whatsapp QR code to get a reward or something like that once the victim scans their code the hacker or attacker can access the WhatsApp web session of the victim and makes complete access on victim account.

This attack is frequently used when the target and attacker was on the same network.

Call Forwarding

In this method, the attacker has physical access to the victim's device and enables call forwarding settings from the target phone number to the attacker's phone number.

In call forwarding, if anyone calls to victim's number then the first call will be redirected to the attacker's number and then he/she can revert back to the victim's number or may also receive it.

Attackers use call verification methods to access victims' accounts using call forwarding.

Men In The Middle Attack

In this method, the attacker and victim were on the same network like an office or college. In some cases, attacker opens their device Hotspot and try to attract victims to connect with it.

Once the victim and attacker were on the same network, the attacker uses some tools to intercept between server and victim and redirect the victim to a fake phishing site.

Email Spoofing

In this attack, the hacker sends the victim a spoofed email that looks like an original email from Whatsapp Support.

That email may contain fake WhatsApp account verification content and try to convince the victim to reveal their OTP like in the case of a Phishing attack.
